Every Child Succeeds

During my practicum teacher's planning period we went to a meeting with other teachers and staff. They were taking 30 6th graders who scored the lowest on their math testing, and trying to come up with solutions to help improve their math skills. One of the math teachers made a comment that the concept students struggle with most is their number sense. She said that if you were to give them a problem such as:
  75
-18
-------

They would take 8-5 then do 7-1. They came up with the idea of testing them all again and seeing which students need which kind of help. From there they will put them in groups and work on building math concepts with them 45 mins a day twice a week. Then they will test them every other week to see if they were making progress.

This is a great idea. I’m glad they are taking the time to collaborate with each other and come up ideas to improve their students math skills. Math is something everyone needs to know and if these students are already behind they are going to continue to fall farther and farther behind. Time needs to be taken to get them where they should be or I’m afraid they will never get there.
